A Study Of The Maker Of Middle-earth

Interesting documentary on Tolkien.

Around the seven minute mark, his sons starts talking about Tolkien's world, and what it is all about: the machine. It expresses Tolkien's deeply held anti-technological perspective, against the man-made actualisations of our desires, which he contrasts with what Ivan Illich might call tools for conviviality. The ring is the ultimate domination of the machine, and the only way to be free is to destroy the machine. This aspect of Tolkien's writing was what stood out the most to me when I read it as a young teenager.
