Alone in the Wilderness
#1
Dick Proenneke was a self-educated naturalist who built a log cabin in Alaska, and lived in it for 30 years. The documentary "Alone in the Wilderness" is like a documentary film version of Walden, and I cannot recommend it enough. I wish I was 1/100th as skilled as this man. Here's a 10m preview of the documentary (the full documentary is about an hour long):

Absolutely beautiful documentary. Simply marvellous. I can't do it justice—just watch it! I'm sure you can find it around. (There's torrents everywhere.) There's also a part 2 (also a must-see), and a planned part 3. There are two other films about the same subject, Alaska: Silence & Solitude, and The Frozen North. Additionally, writings from Proenneke's journal has been published both in various modified and unmodified forms, most famously in One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey. I haven't read any of the written material, although I've been meaning to get a hold of One Man's Wilderness.
