[ANNOUNCEMENT] Relaunch
#22
Hank Hill Wrote:First of all, discussions here are sort of a chore. Not to say they aren't enjoyable or enlightening, but so many people here write long posts and use niche or overly flowery language.

As one of the guilty parties who sometimes uses niche or overly flowery language, I do, at least to an extent, get where you're coming from. I have to admit that I'm a bit of a "theory junkie" and, as such, can get a little bogged down in jargon sometimes. I often forget that not everyone has bothered to read the same things as me or is necessarily even interested in doing so. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and I totally get that. At the same time, it's all stuff that I personally find fascinating and that is, among a certain subset of contemporary anarcho-inspired radicals, very much an ongoing exploration of both theoretical and practical possibilities.

I've never bought the logic which states that, just because a particular set of ideas has emerged within an academic environment or uses specialized language that is alienating to the average Joe on the street, it therefore contains nothing useful for radical social critique. I remember back when anti-politics.net was still active circa 2008/09, most users there were game for that sort of discussion and things would frequently take on a really heady, cerebral tone. I don't know what's changed since then but I haven't been able to find discussion like that anywhere online since.

Does this mean that it can't get out of hand sometimes? Of course not. I'm sure that I could probably tone down the nerdspeak every now and then. However, there are also times when the nature of what's being discussed requires the use of specialized language and, in those instances, if there's something you don't think you understand, then all you have to do is ask for clarification. I'm not going to condescend if someone is asking out of genuine interest. The attitude that I can't hack is the one that assumes that, because the practical applications of a particular concept are not immediately and obviously apparent, they must have no value and can thus be discarded.

Hank Hill Wrote:And probably the last problem is, I'm not the kind who loves technology (who'd have though). I don't come home salivating at the idea of getting to my computer and opening up the internet.

I'm definitely with you on that. I have a love/hate relationship with this magic box and, as much as I relish a good discussion, I find that I have to regulate the amount of time that I spend on here just to keep my daily activities varied and interesting.
