Some evidence suggests lead is a product of civilisation. I.e. there's no such thing as a "background level of lead pollution" — it's all us. The researchers have been analysing ice cores, and figured out e.g. that there effectively was no lead in the years Black Death plagued England, when mining and smelting works were temporarily paused. It seems the "natural level of lead pollution" — where "natural" means non-human sourced — is zero

I understand radiation to be the same, that there was no background radiation until Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the decades of nuke testing. 

The list of our persistent toxins would bend the brain.
